Roche Molecular Diagnostics Research Building
Pleasanton, California

RMD is part of one of the world's leading research-oriented healthcare organizations. Active in the fields of pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, Roche develops innovative products and services that address the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. RMD’s center of research, development, production and strategic marketing is located in Pleasanton, California.

Greene designed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for RMD’s new three-story, 135,000 sq.ft. research building. This building completes the north end of the Pleasanton campus and consolidates all RMD functions in Pleasanton. The building includes 85,000 sq.ft. of research labs and associated offices, a training center, a 145-seat full-service cafeteria, an outdoor dining area and 42,000 sq.ft. of general office space on the third floor to accommodate projected growth through 2011.

Roche Molecular Diagnostics
Bullet Developed a Basis of Design (BOD) document to include a detailed description of MEP systems, to set all design, sizing and performance criteria and to describe a general quality level of equipment.
Bullet Developed a comprehensive process equipment utility matrix for all lab and process equipment to list, identify and document all MEP utilities requirements.

Bullet Designed the facility to meet LEED Silver standards including ultra-low flow water fixtures, roof surface drainage on-grade instead of connecting to the storm drainage system, CO2 monitoring inside the building to optimize air quality and save energy, and full cut-off site lighting to reduce light trespass.
Bullet Implemented Pacific Gas & Electric Savings by Design recommendations including oversizing air handling units and fans by 40% above the typical design (500fpm), duct systems designed for 50% less pressure drop than typical systems, lighting and main power equipment designed to exceed California Title 24 Energy Compliance Standards and daylighting controls for lighting.
Bullet Developed P&IDs and detailed flow diagrams for high pressure steam, process chilled water, lab air flow zoning and pressurization, and direct digital controls (DDC)
This new research building serves as a link between the existing development and pilot manufacturing groups in the adjacent buildings to establish a strong connection between research and development.
